In the first set of tests, HITACHI Europe communication stack specifically implemented for DRIVE C2X and SCORE@F was fully integrated with Vehicular Communication security system (VSS) developed by PRESERVE project. Secure V2X communication (VSS Kit 1) in a form of a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based Hardware Security Module (HSM) was integrated with GeoNetworking (GN) protocol stack developed by HITACHI Europe. As a result, the DRIVE C2X RIS reference system is now successfully integrated with the PRESERVE security module.  After integration and validation tests, the successful collaboration between the research teams led to a joint demonstration at the 19^th ITS World Congress 2012 in Vienna, October 22 – 26 and during the IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference 2012 in Seoul, Korea, November 14-16.  The next milestone in their cooperation is to validate the setup during FOT phase of SCORE@F (March/April, 2013).

An integration and validation meeting between DRIVE C2X and PRESERVE was then organized by NEC Labs in Heidelberg on 15-16 January 2013. The researchers from →NEC Labs and →University Twente ran successful tests for secure communication over ITS-G5 radio using digital signatures and certificates. The tests were carried out with NEC’s embedded hardware platform and PRESERVE’s HSM. As a result, the DRIVE C2X VIS reference system is now successfully integrated with the PRESERVE security module.

PRESERVE is a research project funded by the European Union under the →7th Framework Programme. The mission of PRESERVE is to design, implement, and test a secure and scalable V2X Security Subsystem for realistic deployment scenarios, complementary to the mission of DRIVE C2X. DRIVE C2X and PRESERVE have cooperated since both projects started in January 2011 and exchanged information to harmonize architectures and interfaces. To the same end the partners in the projects also collaborated on standardization efforts in →ETSI and →C2C-CC.  

The second movie, a 3-minute animation, focuses on the DRIVE C2X functions: it shows how traffic participants communicate via C2X to avoid accidents, warn each others of obstacles and bad weather, and approach traffic lights at the right speed for a green light. By communicating and being informed about potentially hazardous traffic situations, both the traffic participants and the environment benefit. Thanks to the international focus of the project, DRIVE C2X becomes the European reference for cooperative driving.

DRIVE C2X says "thank you" to all the visitors at the ITS World Congress in Vienna. DRIVE C2X hosted two special session, presented seven technical papers and was represented at the European Commission exhibition area. One of highlights on the congress was the live driving demonstration of the C2C CC and TT powered by DRIVE C2X technology.

From 22nd to 26th October 2012, the 19th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (ITS) is taking place in Vienna, Austria. Under the theme Smarter on the way, the ITS World Congress will focus on innovative mobility systems for the benefit of all traffic users.

DRIVE C2X participates in multiple activities during the World Congress. In the Congress section, the consortium was invited to organise two special sessions:

• SIS 38 – IBEC: Business models and revenue sources for C2X communication, Wednesday, 24 October, 16.00–17.30, Schubert 3, with Matthias Schulze (Daimler; organiser and moderator), Wolfgang Schulz (IERC), Nadja Rappold (facit), Torsten Geissler (BASt), Marko Jandrisits (ASFINAG), Luisa Andreone (Centro Ricerche Fiat)
• SIS 68: Global deployment of Car-2-X communication technology – a technical perspective on commonalities and similarities, Thursday, 25 October, 16.00–17.30, Schubert 5, with Andreas Festag (NEC Laboratories Europe; organiser and moderator), Mike Shulman (Ford Motor Company), Guan Jizhen (ITS China), Takeshi Yamamoto (NEC), Paul Gray (Cohda Wireless), Lan Lin (Hitachi Europe)

In addition, seven technical papers and a contribution to a special session will be presented by members of the consortium on research undertaken within DRIVE C2X.

In the Exhibition section, DRIVE C2X will present the project status at the exhibition area of the European Commission (Hall B, C20). The DRIVE C2X stand will also feature the Test Management Center of the cooperative driving live demonstration staged at Hall A.

This live demonstration of the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium (C2C CC) and Testfeld Telematik (TT) will be powered by DRIVE C2X technology, using the newly validated DRIVE C2X reference system. Visitors are invited to register for this opportunity to experience C2X technology in real traffic conditions.

This DRIVE C2X @ DITCM event, held on 5 July 2012 at the DRIVE C2X system test site in Helmond, the Netherlands, offered workshops on the various stages of the project, grouped around an activity phase where the visitors had the opportunity to experience the testing process by participating in a demonstration tour around the Helmond test site and by observing the data collection process at the Test Management Center set up at the High Tech Automotive Center adjacent to the test site along A270 between Helmond and Eindhoven.

As described in the system architecture page a European system for cooperative driving technologies yields several benefits for an optimal deployment of C2X: the reference system contributes to a comparable evaluation across borders, interoperability and integration of national systems and a connected large-scale testing platform.

The reference implementation is based on the PRE-DRIVE C2X system and provides a set of software components for vehicle, roadside and central ITS stations, as well as external components for testing. The predecessor system was revised, updated and extended. New components, functions and applications were designed to  create the DRIVE C2X enhanced system.
